The Spider Smuggling black market industry

The Debrief

Tuesday, 19 November 2024 - 42 minutes

On the Debrief Lucy and Inzy look at the crazy story of a man who attempted to smuggle more than 300 tarantulas at an airport in Peru. But they weren't in his suitcase he had them strapped to his body, along with 100 centipedes and 9 stinging bullet ants.

The man has been arrested, but it's just one case of a huge black market of smuggling insects like these for people to buy as pets. It's estimated the market is worth around 40 billion dollars. We speak to a conservationist biologist Sergio Henriques who's now working to try and get these little animals back to their home safely.

Plus we hear from the woman who had a very nice surprise at the end of completing the Dubai T100 triathlon. And, the university student who bumped into Prince William and used his visit as an excuse to get out of a lecture! Clever!
