US Open: Nadal cruises, Osaka survives scare

Rafael Nadal has cruised into the second round of the US Open with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Australian John Millman.

Frenchman Gael Monfils is also through after beating Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Elsewhere, fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem lost to 87th-ranked Italian Thomas Fabbiano 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, while eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas is out after losing to Russian Andrey Rublev 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 5-7.

In the women's competition, defending champion Naomi Osaka overcame Russia’s Anna Blinkova 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, while Simona Halep beat Nicole Gibbs 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and 15-year old Coco Gauff defeated Anastasia Potapova 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has also advanced to the next round but former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has crashed out.
