Pakistan edged past Afghanistan in a thriller to keep their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the World Cup alive.

Batting first, Afghanistan posted 227 for 9 with Asghar Afghan and Najibullah Zadran hitting 42 runs each.

In reply, Pakistan was strangled by the spin of Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan.

But Imad Wasim steered his side to a nervy three-wicket victory in the last over the match, smashing an unbeaten 49.

The win takes Pakistan from seventh to fourth place in the points table.

Meanwhile, Australia thrashed New Zealand by 86 runs at Lord's to stay on top of the table.
