League Cup: Reds scrape past minnows

NULL

Liverpool’s stuttering form continued in the League Cup last night. The Reds, who have only won twice so far this season, needed penalties to see off League Two side Carlisle, after the third round tie at Anfield finished 1-1. Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan were the only positives on a night in which the home crowd made their feelings known, with boos at the end of 90 minutes and extra time. Ings netted his second goal in as many games, whilst 'keeper Bogdan was the hero in the shoot-out, saving three of Carlisle's efforts. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s start to the season got even worse as they fell 1-0 at home to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Like at Anfield, the home faithful voiced their displeasure, as the Magpies lost for the fourth time in a row. Arsenal overcame their arch-rivals Spurs 2-1 at White Hart Lane thanks to a brace from Mathieu Flamini. The midfielder opened the scoring from close range, before an own goal from Callum Chambers levelled matters. But with a little over 10 minutes remaining, Flamini struck a volley past Michael Vorm from 20 yards out to give the Gunners the win. Elsewhere, another London derby saw Crystal Palace beat Charlton 4-1, Manchester United eased to a 3-0 win over Ipswich, Chelsea won 4-1 at Walsall, Norwich overcame fellow EPL side West Brom 3-0, whilst Southampton romped to a 6-0 victory at MK Dons.
