The Aussies had earlier bowled out the Black Caps for 251 and decided not to enforce the follow-on.
Nathan Lyon (5-68) and Pat Cummins (3-44) were the pick of the bowlers, while debutant batsman Glenn Phillips (52) top-scored for New Zealand.
