Massive recall of frozen fruit in US over flu outbreak concerns

A leading frozen food producer in the US has initiated a voluntary recall of its fruit products following concerns over potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, which can result in flu-like infections.

This marks the third recall of frozen fruit within the country this month, signaling an ongoing issue with product safety.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA reported that frozen strawberries from Willamette Valley Fruit Co., based in Oregon, and distributed through Walmart, Costco, and HEB stores, were recalled earlier in the month after being associated with a Hepatitis A outbreak.

Furthermore, just days before, California-based Wawona Frozen Foods, known for their Organic DayBreak Blend, issued a voluntary recall for the product sold at Costco, citing potential Hepatitis A contamination traced back to Mexican-grown strawberries included in the blend.

Listeria infections can manifest symptoms such as severe headaches and abdominal pain in healthy individuals. However, young children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to more severe illness and even death. Pregnant women may also experience miscarriages and stillbirths if infected.

The FDA has strongly advised consumers to check their freezers for any recalled products, and immediately discard them or return to the store of purchase for a full refund.
