Up to AED 1 million in fines for environmental violations in Abu Dhabi

WAM

Strict penalties await those caught violating environmental laws in the UAE capital, with the fines increased up to AED 1 million based on the extent of the violation or its recurrence rate.

The resolution issued by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi (EAD), aims to enhance efforts on protecting the environment and preserving the biodiversity of the area.

The fines - between AED 1,000 and AED 1 million - will cover all practices that were not previously included under the environment protection law.

This resolution provides the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) with a legal tool to empower inspectors to fine facilities, projects and individuals directly, thus reducing the number of judicial referrals.

They will also have the power to reduce the fines if the violators show commitment and efforts to rectify the situation.

The violations will be classified into three categories - (1) development and industrial, (2) hunting, biodiversity and reserves' related, and (3) fishing and discharge in marine environment.

The agency will use smart electronic tools and systems to carry out inspections.
