Traffic control and patrol departments across the UAE have come together for a major safety drive aimed at reducing the number of road accidents and fatalities.

The 'Summer Without Accidents' campaign, led by the Ministry of Interior's Federal Traffic Council, runs until September 1.

It will raise awareness of the traffic rules and the importance of tyre safety and keeping vehicles well-maintained, especially during the summer months.

According to the Federal Traffic Council (FTC), there were 81 deaths and 943 injuries in 785 traffic accidents in the UAE during the third quarter of last year (July to September).

"Traffic accidents still remain a major concern to police units because they result in deaths, injuries and material losses that cost the country huge amounts of money," said Maj. Gen. Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Chairman of the FTC.
