In his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has issued a law regulating rehabilitation and correctional centres.

It's aimed at ensuring the protection of inmates’ rights and the delivery of suitable social and cultural rehabilitation.

According to the new law, punitive and correctional establishments in Abu Dhabi will be renamed rehabilitation and correctional centres.

Operating under the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, these centres’ are tasked with receiving inmates and identifying appropriate duty of care, and informing them about their responsibilities and expected behaviour.

The centres are required to provide health and social care services to inmates, education and professional training opportunities, and delivery of rehabilitation programmes.

They are also responsible for upskilling staff in line with best international practices, enabling them to achieve their objectives of rehabilitating inmates while ensuring effective economic management practices.
