UAE highlights leadership in Climate, Peace, Recovery at COP29

WAM

During the Climate, Peace, Relief, Recovery (CPRR) Day at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reinforced the legacy of COP28 in highlighting the topic.

The event also marked the launch of the UAE’s COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace, endorsed by 94 countries and 43 organisations.

Underlining the UAE’s leadership on the subject, Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, participated in a High-Level Ministerial event hosted by the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, to announce the Baku Call, COP29’s declaration calling for Climate Action for Peace, Relief and Recovery, and the Baku Hub, as its mechanism for implementation. The event was attended by ministers from countries across several regions, in addition to representatives from International organizations and agencies.

At the event, Balalaa underscored that the Baku Hub and the Baku Call “represent two steps forward in enabling climate action in the most vulnerable countries, building on the concrete outcomes from COP28 and the foundations laid at previous COPs." Furthermore, he emphasised the disparity in access to essential financial resources for those in greatest need, noting how this inequity further widens the gap.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ broad engagements on CPRR day included participation in a panel organised by the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA) at the UAE Pavilion, to highlight the actions needed to accelerate climate action within the context of the multifaceted challenges of climate, peace and security, showcase the progress since COP28, and chart the way forward to COP30.
