Self-driving wheelchairs are being trialled at Abu Dhabi International Airport, in a first of its kind initiative in the region.

They’ll help passengers with restricted mobility to navigate easily through the terminal, without any assistance.

The wheelchairs are equipped with an automatic brake function as well as sensors to detect any obstacles.

The technology will come in handy for arriving, departing and transiting travellers.

Abu Dhabi Airports have partnered with Etihad Airways, SITA, and the personal electric vehicle supplier, WHILL to introduce the autonomous wheelchairs at Terminal 3 ahead of its launch at the new Midfield Terminal.

The trial runs will continue for the rest of the year.
