Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has carried out a series of improvements at seven locations across Sheikh Zayed Road to ease traffic congestion.

The changes included widening of roads and lanes, and is aimed at "cutting tailbacks along the important traffic corridor".

The seven major improvements include:

1: The widening of Exit 39 (near Mall of Emirates) from one lane to two lanes, to increase the capacity from 1,800 vehicles to 3,600 vehicles per hour. It also reduces the travel time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Umm Suqeim from 12 minutes to 1:45 minutes.

2: The development of Umm Amara Street in the direction of Safa Park Interchange to ease the bottleneck at the roundabout and increase the flow of traffic towards Abu Dhabi.

3: Alterations made to the free right lane branching out from 2nd of December Street to Sheikh Zayed Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi.

4: Changes to Al Thowima Street at Al Barsha (near Novotel Hotel) to improve accessibility to internal areas of Sheikh Zayed Road.

5: Improvement on Sheikh Zayed Road, nearby Shangri-la Hotel, and the first interchange in the direction of Abu Dhabi.

6: New lane added near the first interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dusit Hotel, in the direction of Sharjah, to accommodate 1,800 vehicles per hour.

7: Improvements made to the entry/exit points of the fourth interchange, in the direction of Sharjah (Al Manara Exit), enabling an increase in capacity from 10,800 vehicles per hour to 12,600 vehicles per hour.
