Dubai Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) 'Intelligent Traffic System' has helped cut travel time by 20 per cent and emergency response time by 30 per cent.

That's the result of the system's first phase, which saw the installation of more than 110 electronic road signs that relay real-time information such as accidents and traffic blocks to motorists.

Almost 120 traffic cameras were also installed during the first phase, which brought the total number of surveillance cameras to 235.

Its second phase, which will begin in the coming months, will cover take the total length of main roads covered from 480 km to 710 km.

"Expanding the ITS coverage is a key element in supporting the government's drive to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world and help ease mobility around the city," said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA.
