The Executive Council of Dubai has approved a plan for the development of Dubai Metro and surrounding areas with a target to expand the network to 140 stations by 2040.

The plans, announced on Sunday, also aim to boost economic opportunities in areas around stations and increase the share of public transport to 45 per cent, while also significantly reducing carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita.

The development plan will expand from 64 stations currently operating over 84 square kilometres to 96 stations over 140 square kilometres by 2030, with the goal of over 228 square kilometres of development by 2040.
