A woman has been arrested in Dubai for begging and practising witchcraft, which she believed would help her influence people to give her money.

Dubai Police said she was caught in a residential area and they found witchcraft talismans, papers and tools in her possession.

The woman was tracked down following a tip-off from a resident who reported her to the Command and Control Centre of the General Department of Operations.

Authorities have stepped up surveillance to combat begging during the holy month of Ramadan.

Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department, has emphasised the importance of not falling victim to beggars' deceptive tactics and fabricated stories.

He has urged the public to promptly report incidents of begging via the toll-free number 901 or the 'Police Eye' service on the Dubai Police app, while online begging schemes can be reported through the e-Crime platform (www.ecrime.ae).
