Seventeen runaway domestic helps have been arrested in Dubai during the first week of Ramadan.

According to Dubai Police, the individuals of different nationalities were nabbed during a crackdown on illegal residents.

The campaign, which will continue throughout the year, has been intensified during the holy month.

Officials have urged the public to immediately report absconding domestic workers and have also warned against hiring runaway maids.

"They choose to escape from their sponsors so they could work at different households and get paid hourly so they make a lot of money in a short period," said Colonel Ali Salem, Director of the Department of infiltrators at Dubai Police.

"Such violators usually seek their way into new homes under fake names and without legal documents, in violation of the laws and regulations," he added.
