There are "multiple fatalities" after shootings at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

All mosques countrywide have been advised to remain closed on Friday due to a "very serious and tragic incident involving an active shooter".

Police confirmed one person is in custody but said it was unclear if others were involved.

Speaking to the nation, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described it as "one of New Zealand's darkest days".

"Clearly what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence."
