Democrats vying to become the next president of the USA have clashed at a debate in Detroit.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders strongly defended their progressive policies.

Meanwhile their more moderate rivals attacked their left-leaning ideas, calling them unrealistic.

However all 10 candidates stressed the importance of defeating Republican President Donald Trump in the November 2020 election.

The remaining 10 Democratic candidates will battle it out on Wednesday night.

The lineup includes Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
