Dangerous flash floods hit Washington DC, prompting rescues

A dangerous flash flood emergency hit Washington DC, leaving several drivers to abandon their cars and delaying subway lines during Monday rush hour.

With up to four inches of rain falling in as little as an hour, the National Weather Service said the area witnessed significant flash flooding.

Several water rescues were performed as high waters overflowed the roads. 

The rain flooded the main power vault at DC's National Archives, prompting its closure, and also impacted the White House basement.
