Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho has expressed his surprise, and delight, at receiving six Oscar nominations for 'Parasite'.

The dark comedy about the gap between the rich and poor in South Korea has been nominated for best picture, best director, best editing, best production design, best original screenplay and best international feature nomination.

Bong said it marked a historic moment for South Korea's film industry. "Every time they announced the new nominations, it was so thrilling, because we didn't really anticipate any of this," he told Reuters.

The director added that international films are finally breaking the "language barrier" globally.

"We can say that thanks to the internet, social media and these streaming services, the entire society is experiencing less of these language barriers and perhaps 'Parasite' benefited from that global trend.".
