Oscar Pistorius released from prison

Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison. The Olympian was jailed for five years last year after being convicted of the manslaughter of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and was released to his uncle's home in Pretoria, South Africa on Monday (19.10.15), where he is expected to serve the remainder of his sentence. The athlete emerged from jail a day earlier than expected, a spokesman from the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre announced. According to the BBC, he will do a "period of community service" and his conditions of release from prison include psychotherapy and restrictions on gun ownership. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old athlete's case is scheduled to go in front of South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal again in November as prosecutors plan to challenge the decision to acquit him of murder. The appeal hearing means Pistorius could be found guilty of murder and face a minimum of 15 years in prison, if a panel of judges at the Supreme Court of Appeal overturn the original verdict. Prosecutors believe Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend on Valentine's Day 2013 after an argument but the Olympian insists he mistook the model for an intruder when he shot her through a closed bathroom door. Judge Thokozile Masipa ruled in December that prosecutors could appeal her verdict at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
