Netflix has defended its Oscar run after some filmmakers criticised its inclusion in the awards ceremony.
It took to Twitter to express their "love (for) cinema" and felt it should be easier for people who can't get to theatres to see films.
We love cinema. Here are some things we also love:
— Netflix Tudum (@NetflixTudum) March 4, 2019
-Access for people who can't always afford, or live in towns without, theaters
-Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time
-Giving filmmakers more ways to share art
These things are not mutually exclusive.
Earlier, Steven Spielberg had publicly objected to the fact that a streaming service like Netflix can be recognised at the Oscars. He believed it should compete in the Emmys, instead.
Netflix's Roma got 10 Oscar nominations and won three.
