The UAE has taken another major step towards implementing the next stage of the 1,200km-long Etihad Rail network.

A contract worth AED 1.5 billion has been awarded for the design and construction of the project’s second phase in Al Dhafra region.

A team comprising China State Construction Engineering Corporation and South Korea’s SK Engineering and Construction has bagged the deal.

Work will be carried out on a 139km stretch, connecting Ruwais with Ghuweifat on the UAE border with Saudi Arabia.

When complete, Stage Two will run for 605km from Ghuweifat to the Port of Fujairah.

More contracts are expected to be finalised in the coming months.
