Dubai International Airport (DXB) has been ranked the world's busiest hub for international passengers for a tenth consecutive year.
That's according to preliminary data released by the Airports Council International (ACI) for 2023.
London Heathrow, Amsterdam's Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Singapore's Changi rounded out the top-five spots.
According to ACI, DXB handled more than 86.9 million passengers in 2023, a 31.7 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
"DXB is proud to uphold its status as the world's foremost international airport for an unparalleled ten years," said Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports' CEO.
"Throughout this decade, DXB has surpassed many records and attained numerous milestones, from welcoming our billionth passenger to introducing new terminals and facilities, collaborating with numerous airlines to broaden connectivity to diverse global destinations, all the while enhancing every aspect of the airport experience for our guests," he added.
In terms of overall traffic, which includes domestic and international passengers, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its number one position (104.6 million passengers), while DXB jumped to second rank for the first time, surpassing Dallas Forth Worth International Airport in third position.
London Heathrow was ranked 4th, while Tokyo Haneda International Airport jumped from 16th position in 2022 to 5th in 2023.
"Global air travel in 2023 was chiefly fuelled by the international segment, propelled by several factors. Among these were the anticipated benefits from China’s reopening and a growing inclination towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions," said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World Director General.
