White nationalists rally at US university

Hundreds of white nationalists have protested at a US university against plans to remove a statue of a pro-slavery Civil War general.

The rally, which took place at the University of Virginia, included protestors waving torches and chanting “white lives matter.”

They want the statue of General Robert E Lee, who commanded forces of the pro-slavery Confederacy in the US Civil War, to stay.

Clashes ensued after a small group of counter protesters appeared at the scene.
