WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton is leaving the Facebook-owned messaging service company to start his own non-profit business.
He made the announcement through a Facebook post that read “After 8 years at WhatsApp, I have decided to move on and start a new chapter in my life.”
Calling it a “tough decision,” he said, “I’m proud of what our team has accomplished in only a few years, and it’s humbling to see that so many people rely on WhatsApp every day.”
Acton, who previously worked at Yahoo, co-founded WhatsApp with Jan Koum in 2009.
In 2014, WhatsApp was bought by Facebook for $19 billion in cash and stock.
