UAE launches shark conservation plan

The UAE is taking steps to protect its native population of sharks.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) has launched a four-year national plan of action aimed at conserving and managing the marine animals.

Close to half of the 43 species of sharks that are found in the UAE’s waters are classified as endangered.

The Ministry’s action plan has four main objectives:

  • educate UAE residents about sharks and their role in the ecosystem
  • implement an effective conservation policy
  • enable effective conservation through capacity building
  • run an educational and outreach programmes to raise public awareness about sharks
