Trump threatens national emergency as shutdown continues

US President Donald Trump has threatened to declare a national emergency if lawmakers can’t reach a deal to fund his promised $5.7 billion border wall.

The partial government shutdown has lasted 20 days, leaving about 800,000 federal employees without pay.

“We can declare a national emergency. We shouldn’t have to,” Trump told reporters while visiting the border with Mexico on Thursday. “This is just common sense.”
