Trump asks for Xi’s help in UCLA players’ shoplifting case
US President Donald Trump has approached Chinese President Xi Jinping to help release three UCLA basketball players who have been detained in China on suspicion of shoplifting last week.
According to reports, Trump raised the issue with the Xi during the US leader’s state visit to Beijing.
A White House official said Xi assured Trump that he would look into the matter.
The UCLA players were released early on Wednesday, but are barred from leaving China and confined to a luxury hotel in Hangzhou pending legal proceedings.
