Teargas used to disperse thousands of Kenyan opposition protesters

Thousands of opposition protesters have been teargassed in Kenya’s three main cities of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

Police have been called in as a standoff continues between the government and opposition leaders over a planned repeat presidential election.

On Thursday, the government banned demonstrations in the three cities after the interior minister said demonstrators had damaged and looted property.

A repeat presidential election pitting is scheduled for October 26.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had nullified the result of an August poll in which incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta beat opposition leader Raila Odinga, saying there were irregularities.

But Odinga withdrew from the race this week, demanding a new election with a new election board after accusing it of failing to institute reforms.

Supporters of Odinga took to the streets as poll officials mull their next move.
