Spain summons 700 Catalan mayors over independence vote
Spain’s public prosecutor has summoned more than 700 Catalan mayors who backed an independence referendum that Madrid has deemed illegal.
Police have been directed to arrest the mayors should they fail to answer the summons.
The letter delivered to local authorities on Wednesday said council leaders who participated in the vote could face charges of civil disobedience, abuse of office and misuse of public funds.
Despite objections, Catalonia’s pro-independence government said the October 1 referendum will go ahead.
