Spain fires coach on World Cup eve

Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as Spain’s head coach on the eve of the FIFA World Cup.

The 51-year-old has been replaced by Spain’s Sporting Director Fernando Hierro for the tournament.

The Spanish Football Federation said it had dismissed Lopetegui, who negotiated to become the new Real Madrid boss without them knowing.

The change is seen as a major blow for one of the tournament favourites.

Madrid announced on Tuesday that Lopetegui would succeed Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu on a three-year deal.
