The Agenda Talks National Pride
07 June 2018: Are you proud of your nationality or do you find yourself apologising for it?
We’re all human beings and our nationalities are simply an accident of birth. A recent survey in the UK showed that young people are far less likely to feel proud to be English than older generations. Eight out of 10 people in England identify strongly as English but pride varies by age.
YouGov surveyed 20,081 people and found 72% of over-65s are proud to be English, compared with 45% of 18-24s.
In the modern age, some languages have become symbols for independence movements, such as the Basque language in Spain. A survey in the US showed that 83% of Republicans say that being able to speak English is very important to being truly American, 22% points higher than Democrats.
