Philippines President Duterte pushes free birth control

12 January 2017
The Philippines government has ordered free access to birth control to an estimated six-million women.

President Rodrigo Duterte says the move will help reduce unwanted pregnancies among the poor.

His order, which is hoped to reduce poverty, is expected to face religious opposition.

In 2015, the Supreme Court had placed a temporary ban on the distribution of birth control ruining the work done by Duterte’s predecessor.

The current executive order prioritises getting contraceptives to two million women identified as poor by 2018.
