PUBLIC CALLS FOR ACTION ON PLAYGROUND BULLIES

Parents are calling on UAE authorities to clamp down on school-yard bullying.

It follows the case of an 11-year-old girl who ended up in hospital last week, after being beaten up by a group of fellow pupils.

Lujain Hussein suffered a brain haemorrhage and is currently in a medically induced coma, under observation at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

Following wide-spread media coverage, the spotlight’s been turned on the issue of bulling in the country’s schools.

ARN spoke to Samineh Shaheen, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Middlesex University in Dubai about what signs parents should look out - that could indicate their child is being bullied:

The UAE capital's economy grew 7.7% year on year in 2012. The Statistics Centre, Abu Dhabi attributes it to huge financial surpluses, strong growth in non-oil sectors and high oil prices.
