MOONSIGHTING COMMITTEE SET UP AHEAD OF RAMADAN

The UAE has set up its official moon sighting committee for Ramadan.

The group will be in charge of the crescent sighting which marks the beginning of the holy month.

Members include senior Awqaf and judiciary officials as well as religious counsellors and members of the astronomical society.

According to a decree, the committee will meet after Maghreb prayers on Thursday, at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.

Members will follow up the sighting of the moon in the central, eastern and western regions of the country, before an announcement is made.

Officials say the beginning of Ramadan is expected to be announced this Friday or Saturday.

The UAE capital's economy grew 7.7% year on year in 2012. The Statistics Centre, Abu Dhabi attributes it to huge financial surpluses, strong growth in non-oil sectors and high oil prices.
Speeding taxi drivers in Dubai are set to face further controls. The RTA has installed a new system on cabs called AMAN which is a self powered sensor that monitors the vehicles.
Tens of thousands of people across the globe today are marking 'World Refugee Day', in recognition of the situation of refugees worldwide.
