INDIAN GOVERNMENT IN CRISIS
A key ally of the Indian government has withdrawn support leaving it with a shortage in the number of ministers required to stay in power.
The Trinamool congress has pulled back six ministers over the centre’s decision to introduce FDI in retail and hike diesel prices.
However its leader Mamata Banerjee gave a lifeline to United Progressive Alliance, saying she would reconsider her move if the government withdrew its decision.
It brings the United Progressive Alliance’s effective strength in the 545-seat Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament) from 273 to 254, which is slightly under the half-way mark.
The opposition has asked the government to prove its majority.
