DUBAI DOCTOR SENTENCED IN ABSENTIA FOR TRYING TO ABORT PATIENT’S BABY
A doctor has been sentenced to three years in prison, after attempting to abort a foetus without the mother's consent.
The 56-year-old female Iraqi medic – whose whereabouts are currently unknown – has been sentenced in absentia by Dubai Criminal Court.
According to reports, the 41-year-old victim went to the doctor in her third month of pregnancy, suffering from a fever, bleeding and chronic fatigue.
Although the doctor apparently reassured her about the baby’s health, within weeks the patient's condition had deteriorated – and subsequent tests showed her child had Down's Syndrome and deformities.
Her doctor reportedly prescribed a suppository to ease the pain – and advised the patient to abort the baby.
The woman then started bleeding and was admitted to hospital, where medics explained the suppository was in fact a medication to induce labour.
The baby was born suffering from bleeding on the brain, and died an hour later.
