Melania Trump's Slovenian parents get US citizenship

The Slovenian-born parents of US First Lady Melania Trump have become US citizens in a private ceremony in New York.

It’s unclear how long it took Viktor and Amalija Knavs to complete the citizenship process, nor whether the 48-year-old First Lady had sponsored their permanent residency.

In the past, President Donald Trump has criticised family-based or “chain” immigration that allows naturalised US citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency. He has, instead, called for a merit-based system that prioritises professionals over relatives, arguing that the system steals jobs from Americans and threatens national security.
