Match-fixing referee given life ban from football

An international football referee has been banned from the sport for life for match-fixing.

Joseph Lamptey was found guilty of “unlawfully influencing” the result of a World Cup qualifier in November 2016.

He gave a highly controversial penalty to South Africa for a handball by a Senegal defender, despite the ball hitting Kalidou Koulibaly’s leg.

South Africa went on to win the game 2-1.
