Indian hospital chief suspended after 60 children die in 5 days
The chief of a public hospital in northern India has been suspended after 60 children died over the last five days.
It’s alleged that the victims, mostly at the neonatal unit or being treated for encephalitis, died after oxygen supply was cut over unpaid bills.
According to the local media, relatives were trying to support the staff at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital using manual breathing bags.
An official investigation has been launched into the role of the oxygen vendor, following reports that funds, which were cleared on August 5, were not released to the supplier until August 11.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “deaths due to oxygen shortage would mean a despicable incident”.
