Gina Haspel confirmed as CIA director
Gina Haspel has been confirmed as the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) first ever female director.
The US Senate approved her post despite the part Haspel played in the spy agency’s post-9/11 interrogation programme.
She oversaw a black site in Thailand after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.
Her confirmation comes after a bitter partisan debate among senators about the CIA’s use of torture techniques such as waterboarding.
In the end, half a dozen Democrats crossed party lines to confirm Haspel in a 54-45 vote.
