Germany, Portugal, Argentina announce initial World Cup squad
Injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been named in Germany’s extended 27-man World Cup squad, but there is no place for 2014 World Cup winner Mario Goetze.
Neuer has not played since September and still has to prove his fitness at a two-week-long training camp, which starts next week.
Germany’s head coach Joachim Loew has also handed a first call-up to Freiburg striker Nils Petersen (29), the top-scoring German in the Bundesliga this season with 15 goals.
Meanwhile, Fabio Coentrao and Renato Sanches are the notable absentees in Portugal’s 35-strong pre-World Cup squad, which includes Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and other mainstays of the team that won Euro 2016.
Elsewhere, Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi and young striker Lautaro Martinez were among 35 players named in Argentina’s provisional squad.
