Fossil of hippo relative found in Abu Dhabi
A new species of an extinct relative of the hippopotamus has been identified in Abu Dhabi.

The findings have been published in a paper in the journal ‘Palaeo Vertebrata’.

The fossilised bones were found in the Al Dhafra region from the Baynunah Formation which dates back to six to eight million years, where there would have been large open plains, rivers and woodland.

The new species has been named Archaeopotamus qeshta.
