Dutch minister quits after lying about Putin meeting

Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra has resigned after admitting he lied about being in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A visibly upset Zijlstra made the announcement in parliament, after MPs had summoned him to explain himself.

He said he’d committed “the biggest mistake of his political career”.

Zijlstra had claimed he attended a meeting in 2006 at which Putin outlined a strategy for building a greater Russia.
