In Conversation with Mike Tyson: Talking Joshua, Mayweather vs. McGregor and Career Highlight

Mike Tyson has hailed Anthony Joshua as the new king of boxing who can rule the heavyweight division like he once did in the late 1980s.

Speaking exclusively to Sports Tonight at the launch of Dubai’s Mike Tyson Academy, the man who still holds the record as the youngest heavyweight champion in history, said Joshua’s dramatic 11th round TKO of veteran Wladimir Klitschko  had put the spotlight back on an ailing division.

“It [Joshua’s win] made me realise, ‘wow we’ve got a new talent out there and he’s going to knock these guys out cold’,” said Tyson. “Triple G [Gennady Golovkin] and Canelo [Saul Alvarez] is going to be another [big] multi-million dollar fight. But I don’t care how many fights these small guys [like Floyd Mayweather] have, we’ve got a new king on the block.”

And the former Baddest Man on the Planet claims the manner in which Joshua defeated Klitschko will stand him in good stead as he eyes future bouts with the likes of Tyson Fury and unbeaten American Deontay Wilder. “[Joshua’s] heart overcomes all his weaknesses. He took a bomb [in the sixth round] and still got back up. This is what makes him special, that dramatic ending – Boom!”

Asked whether the proposed ‘franken-fight’ between the retired Floyd Mayweather and UFC star Conor McGregor was good for boxing, Tyson indicated that he would prefer to see the match take place inside an octagon. “It only gives boxing a bad name because Conor’s not skilled enough to box with Floyd.”

“If he fought UFC and we could see Floyd box there, that would be more exciting. Then we’d see how he handles the kicks to the legs. Conor’s got some amateur boxing skills, but he’s not a boxer.”
