Controversial asylum rules proposed by US administration

The White House has announced plans to deny asylum for any migrants that enter the United States illegally from its southern border.

Administration officials claim that the rule will come into effect once a presidential proclamation is issued by Donald Trump.

They claim that the president can implement the move in the “national interest”.

However, rights groups say that the plans would be illegal as individuals are allowed to apply for asylum whether they are at a port of entry or not, according to US law.
