The question we asked on the program was whether or not men and women should be treated differently in the workplace?
The 1st thing that comes to mind is childbirth; here we have a clear gender difference.
Men do not deliver children so right off the start we have something that differentiates the sexes.
Maternity leave is an issue and in this case women might be treated differently.
But some quick witted guy might point out that men can take care of a child just as well as a woman, and might actually want to be around a newborn, leading them to ask for paternity leave.
So the differentiation gap is reduced.
Of course there is the issue of some jobs just being more appropriate for women.
This line of thinking is full of emotion and controversy and sure to ruffle a few feathers.
I am not sure which jobs exactly are gender specific but some callers did feel that the sexes are different and they need to be treated differently in the workplace.
I think this might be a line of thinking that could get some men into a whole heap of trouble.
It was interesting to hear a woman talking about how being girly, too feminine, is just too much and part of the gender difference problem.
If women want to be treated equal on the job they need to act like equals and in some cases that may mean being a little less feminine.
So what do women think about equality in the workplace and do they really want it?
This was a great exchange.
In the end the general consensus was clearly pointing towards equality of the sexes.
But can we play the culture card in the UAE or is that an argument that is also on its last legs?
Here is the podcast of the show in its entirety.
