Getting Techy on #TheTicket

Shams from Dell joins us every couple of weeks to talk Tech on The Ticket and he has a very extreme way of making sure he is awake especially when he’s travelling.

Ruggie – alarm clocks that will definitely wake you up.

How many of you snooze your mornings away?  i.e. snooze your alarms? …do it at least once? …more than once? I got to experience Ruggie in a hotel. It’s a bedside rug, extremely effective and loud. You have to stand on it for three seconds before it shuts off.

You can even upload custom MP3s, motivational quotes or songs as you can see in the video below.

Price: AED 330 ($89).

Of course the alternative is to just fall on it and then you can still sleep for as long as you want.

But whenever I travel and need a wakeup call, I always ask the hotel to bring me an espresso and if I don’t wake up to drink the espresso then they slap my face with a wet towel!  Seriously.

Phone Charger Cases

Do you carry portable chargers just to charge your phone when it runs dry? These are phone cases that also double up as chargers – I bring this one up because I was surprised how many people don’t know about these.

juice pack

There’s many out there, you can get them for free as well in conventions, but if you are interested in one, I would recommend getting one from a decent mobile power solutions company.

Price: 200 to 300 AED for a decent charger case.

USB 3.0 Hub or USB Charging Stations

The number of plugins are growing, and the number of USB slots on PCs is shrinking … isn’t that true? Again, you could get some cheap dinky hub free from a convention center or something … it will last a few days or weeks.

A real good idea is to get one that fits all sorts of dongles, e.g. USBs (clearly), but also a variety of card readers.

Price: In Carrefour these things could run you above AED 300 but you could get a decent USB hub for AED 75.

Airselfie – Drones for Selfie Addicts

There’s already quite a few drones out there with cameras, but this one may fit the bill (pun intended) perfectly:

    • It’s light weight and fits inside your pocket – 61g.
    • Might just be the same size as your phone, they’ll go so well together!  They make the drone+case as a phone cover.
    • Minimal features, let it fly and take the shot.
    • 5MP camera (compare to 10+ MP cameras on most phones today), 3-minutes flight time.

Price: AED 1000 (pre-order)

There are other drones out there for much more professional aerial photographers and film makers there’s drones like the DJI Mavic or the Yuneec Typhoon.

These are the 12MP cameras, 25+ minutes flight time, can shoot 4K videos but these could be AED 5k and up.

Sand-Free Mats

Dubai loves the beach, but we don’t like the sand on the beach do we? Here’s a mat designed to keep the sand of your mat, off you for example, and off your food, etc.

The videos have been doing the rounds recently, but this is not new technology. There are a few models out there, but the original creators were the CGears.

Price: small 183 to large 300 AED.

The large one could weight up to 2.5kg. It was originally used by the military for an assortment of activities, including as a helimat. But the only con is it doesn’t work that well with wet sand!!!

Scrubba Portable Laundry System Wash Bag

For the outdoors people, this lightweight, pocket-size wash bag will not only help you do your laundry anywhere on the road, but also save you money and time.

I actually like this thing and have it. Quality wash whenever and wherever you want. It’s a modern take on the old fashioned washboard: lots of bumpy grooves and all to rough up the clothes.

Use of this bag really reduces the amount of clothes than you need to pack for a trip.

Price: AED 183.

Bubble Tent

This may not a gift for a friend…unless you love them very much.

These are inflatable camping / backyard tents that are … mostly transparent.

Made from durable, high-quality materials, this inflatable bubble tent is an accessory for camping and outdoor enthusiasts with a penchant for stargazing.

So, if you fancy sleeping in a bubble or dreaming under the starry sky, minus the bugs and mosquitos, this cute transparent structure might be exactly what you are looking for.

The Outdoor Single Tunnel Inflatable Bubble Tent is roomy enough to accommodate a family and comes with free repair kit, glue, and blower.
