At least 2 killed as powerful storm pounds Northeast US

At least two people have been killed after powerful storms carrying strong winds and torrential rain slammed the US Northeast on Tuesday.

The extreme weather has disrupted transport services and caused widespread power outages across many parts.

The weather bureau has issued flash flood warnings for eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey, while a state of emergency has been declared in several counties in New York state.

Some schools in New Jersey and Massachusetts cancelled classes on Wednesday due to the damage.

More rain has been forecast for the next couple of days.
